Take Action: Stop the Latest Selective Service (Draft) Bill

CALL TO ACTION: Stop SB-1081

Stop SB-1081: A bill to automatically register draft-age applicants for California

driver’s licenses with the Selective Service System (SSS)

  1. Call all 15 committee members on Thursday, April 4th. This should take only about 2 minutes per call.
  2. Please share with your California friends! California is the most populous state that doesn’t link driver’s licenses to draft registration, and trying to pass this bill is the highest national priority for the Selective Service System and supporters of a military draft.
  3. Write a letter by April 1st, as an individual or from your organization (details below)

Call Script

“Ask Senate Transportation Committee member, Senator _________, to vote No on Senate Bill # 1081 that is currently before the committee.”

  • You may be asked to leave your name and city and/or zip code. This is optional, but is encouraged.
  • You will be speaking to an administrative assistant on the phone. Be polite.
  • They should be writing down what the bill number is and what your position is. They usually won’t ask why, but they might.

Details of bill

Title: SENATE BILL NO. 1081

Who: Introduced by Senator Archuleta on February 12, 2024

What: LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

SB 1081, as introduced, Archuleta. Vehicles: driver’s license: selective service.

Existing law establishes the practices and procedures for the issuance of an original or a renewal of a driver’s license. The federal Military Selective Service Act requires specified persons to register with the United States Selective Service System.

“This bill would require a person who is required to be registered under the federal act and who submits an application for a driver’s license, identification card, or renewal to be deemed to have consented to registration with the United States Selective Service System, as provided. The bill would require the Department of Motor Vehicles to include specified notices on an application for a driver’s license, identification card, or renewal and would require the department to forward the necessary personal information required for registration to the United States Selective Service System in an electronic format. The bill would prohibit the department from making or distributing a list of individuals who did not consent to registration with the United States Selective Service System, as specified. This bill would require the department to solicit federal funds to implement these provisions and, if it receives that funding, to report to the Legislature and post specific information on its internet website, as specified.”
